The Freedom STARS After school Program provides tutoring, homework support and enrichment activities for three hours daily Monday-Friday on the campus of Freedom Elementary School. It is primarily funded through state and federal grants for after school programs. We are also supported by several partnerships. The mission of the Freedom STARS Program is to assist students in raising English proficiency and academic achievement, to broaden students’ interests by offering choices of diverse enrichment activities, and to provide a safe environment in which all adults are role models of respect, responsibility and caring. Students are grouped by grade or grade block. Each group has an adult leader who is responsible for monitoring students’ attendance, behavior and homework completion. Each student spends the first 1 to 2 hours each day in tutorial and/or homework club with a ratio of 1 adult to every 5-10 students. Students spend the final 60-90 minutes each day participating in an activity of his/her choice. These activities are led by adults and youth from within and outside of our community. Examples of some activity choices are: art, technology, violin, flag football, modern and folkloric dance, math club, cartooning and writers’ workshop. Students choose new activities every 5-7 weeks. Students are provided with a snack each day and are encouraged to participate in daily fitness activities. Students with the most academic need are given the highest priority for participation in the STARS Program. However, we strive to accommodate families who have needs beyond academic support, especially childcare emergencies in which a child has no one at home to supervise him/her between 2:30 and 5:30 p.m. If you would like more information regarding our program you may call Freedom School and ask for Liz Gordon-Stoll or click here to send an e-mail. |
