Greetings. I was a cabin leader this past week for Outdoor Science School while Freedom and Ann Soldo attended. Following up on my curiosity for more information on the background of these schools, I found this school site and this section of the site. I felt the need to express my appreciation for the teachers who teach here. This week, I crossed paths with some children who alone were an entirely foreign experience to me on so many different levels. It was a difficult experience in some aspects, but at the end of the week, my conclusion was that these kids were good kids and I wouldn't have traded this experience for anything. Some of the kids were exceptional, wonderful kids. Fact of the matter though, despite how great they really are, is that they are a hard group of kids to handle. And for you teachers to be able to help them grow, care for them, nurture them into better people of our society, and at the same time conduct so much respect and admiration from them, is truly an incredible, honorable thing. I find that teachers are such a beautiful, vital part of our world, and the teachers that I have encountered this week have only made me more passionate towards that belief. One teacher who really made an impression on me was Mr. A. The way I saw him interact with the students was amazing. Mr. A spoke to them with such sincerity and gentle guidance. There was so much rationale but at the same time this empathy, caring discipline in his voice that it just blew me away. He made the respect I hold towards teachers that much more profound. It was apparent in his eyes the love he had for kids, and it was apparent in the kids' eyes their subconscious acknowledgement towards that fact. I wish I could say these things to Mr. A's face, as well as all these other teachers. What you do is beautiful. Who you are is beautiful. If I had one wish, it would be to get to know these teachers, these stellar people better, but as it is with most teachers, rarely is there ever enough time. I'd just like to say thank you so much, we owe virtually all the beautiful elements of life to you. You put the hope into tomorrow that seems so scarce nowadays. I wish you all the best, and nothing but. And I hope with all my heart that this message will somehow reach you. You guys are simply extraordinary. -justine

I would like to thank all of the teachers that I had while I was at Freedom School (1982-85), who knew how to address my needs as a second language learner. Thank you for taking up the challenge and doing what many shy away from. I learned a lot of things but more importantly I learned that I could be proud of who I was, who I am and who I am becoming...even against great odds. I am currently a PhD student in the Sociology Department at the University of California Santa Cruz, at least part of the fact that I can write all of this in english is because of great...maestros que tomaron el tiempo para trabajar con estudiantes como yo y que saben la importancia de su trabajo pero no se olvidan que los estudiantes tambien saben mucho y tienen sus propias experiencias. There are many teachers and others to thank. I recall Mrs. Rita, Mrs. Lota, Mr. Valdez, Mr. Crowley (although he was my brother's teacher). If any of you get this message, as well as all of the others who are not mentioned but remember me, Muchisimas Gracias por toda su ayuda y su esfuerzo...especially given the long history of attacks and challenges to working with migrant youth, I realize you took on quite task and hope that it has been rewarding. -Veronica Lopez-Duran

I want to thank a teacher that I admire alot and that has a great ambition for teaching. Her name is Jennifer Julkowski. She is sucha great person from the inside and out.She is the one of the few people that have a devotion to teaching not like any other techers who just read you the book and hope that you understand the text, She explains and makes things clear. Besides being a teacher she is better than a best friend she is a great person. She is admireable in every way. She made a difference in my life and still does. I know there are not enough words to describe my gratitude and my thankfulness to whoever made my schedule to have her as one of my teachers. with all this I want to thank her for aspiring to be the person I am now.

I want to thank Ms. Aasletten (sorry for the spelling) for being a great teacher and a great person. I know it is a little late to be writing this but it needs to be said. Because of her I am considering a third grade teaching career. I'm now studying at San Jose State to pursue this. I hope to become a teacher as good as her some day and help students the way she did. So thank you very much, I'll never forget you.

I went to Freedom School when all the teachers were firm yet guiding... Mr. Hand, Ms. Dial, Mrs.Webster...all of these helped shaped me into the person I am today. I felt encouraged and always as if somebody believed in me. I could always count on a challenge from all of them but those are my most memorable and happy school days. Thanking them with words would never suffice... I hope they are happy to know that because of teachers like them I know work with children myself and am going back to school to hopefully get my credential. Thank you so much from the bottom of my heart!

Hello Mrs. Lota, Having you as a teacher prepared for what lay ahead of me. I traveled the world as a soldier in the U.S. Army. I was a Telecommunications Center Supervisor. My last assignment was in Baumholder, Germany close to the borders of France and Luxembourg. My unit consisted of U.S. Army and Air Force, British Army and Air force, German Army and Air Force, Netherlands Royal Soldiers and Belgian Army. I remember how you talked me into singing "Silver Bells"(I still sing it!}, How you used to have those "theme lunches". If we studied Mexico, Mexican food at the end of the week. I really learned to appreciate all the countries and their people and especially their cultures as I saw the world. So I thank you with the utmost respect to the teacher who went beyond teaching the basics. My mother Maria M. Flores (Nena) said to say hi and hope you and your family are well. anyway, I hope next time I'm in Watsonville I'll get a chance to talk with you. Respectfully, Juan F. Flores Jr
